Brand food & drink photography for restaurants & shops

Today I’m sharing some tips for styling food for a photo session. I have definitely been a learn-as-I-go food photographer, but I’ve picked up some great ideas and techniques along the way.

  1. Plan ahead: Before you start shooting, plan out the layout of the shot and the style you want to achieve. Think about the colors, textures, and shapes of the food you're photographing, and how you can arrange them to create an appealing composition.

  2. Use props: Props can add interest and context to your food photos. Consider using things like tablecloths, plates, silverware, and other accessories to complement your food and make your photos more visually appealing.

  3. Keep it simple: Don't overcrowd your shot with too many items or too much food. A minimalist approach can often be more effective, highlighting the beauty of the food itself.

  4. Pay attention to lighting: Good lighting is crucial in food photography. Use natural light whenever possible and avoid harsh shadows. You can also use reflectors or diffusers to adjust the lighting and create a softer, more flattering effect.

  5. Focus on the details: Details are important in food photography. Pay attention to things like the garnishes, sauces, and textures of the food. Use shallow depth of field to highlight specific details and create a sense of depth in your photos.

  6. Experiment with angles: Try shooting from different angles to create a variety of perspectives. Consider shooting from above, below, or at an angle to add interest and variety to your shots.

  7. Don't be afraid to play with your food: Food is a highly visual medium, so don't be afraid to get creative with it. Use interesting shapes, textures, and colors to create visually striking compositions that will capture the viewer's attention.

By following these tips, you can create beautiful and appetizing food photos that will make your viewers hungry and eager to try the dishes themselves. And it doesn’t hurt when the food or drinks are super colorful like the ones from this shoot with Ginger Ale’s! Ginger Ale’s is coming soon to Savoy and I can’t wait to take my family there!
